Control your Tongue

“In one hadeeth the Prophet sallallahu ‘alyhi wasallam advised a Companion to control his tongue. If we ponder upon this hadeeth we will see that the Prophet sallallahu ‘alyhi wasallam is not stopping us from speaking. Rather he sallallahu alyhi wasallam is instructing us to control our tongues.
How does one gauge whether his tongue is under control or not? One can assess this by seeing whether he thinks before he speaks and whether he only says that which is good.
If one does not think before speaking and he speaks those things which are useless then his tongue is not under his control. Rather his tongue has control over him.”
